Home improvement ideas to increase water pressure in your faucets

Low water pressure in your faucets can be a pain, to say the least. However, all hope is not lost; typically, you can use a few home improvement ideas to increase water pressure without the use of expensive methods. It will require a bit of sleuthing to start with, in order to identify the culprit that’s causing the problem in the first place. Often the issue can be rectified with very simple measures, but if the water supply to your home is the reason, then inexpensive methods won’t work. Municipal systems that rely on ancient water systems often have this problem, and it can’t be solved easily.

You first step to solve the problem locally is to figure out where the causative fault lies. If it’s confined to a particular room like the kitchen, that makes your job easier. Check for sedimentation that might be creating a bottle-neck for the water flow. You can easily verify if it’s the fixture itself causing the problem by removing it and turning the water on; if the pressure is fine, then either clean out the fixture and see if your problem has been eliminated, or replace it. If the problem persists, then it could be that the plumbing pipes that supply the room with water are corroded or clogged. If that’s the case, then you will need a professional plumber to clean it out, or replace it if the blockage or corrosion is severe.

If the low water pressure problem is seen across all fixtures in your home, the first check the pressure gauge outside your house where the public water supply enters your property. The regulating mechanism might have been set to a lower pressure accidentally. If that’s the problem then your answer is simple – just open it fully and check if that takes care of your pressure issue inside the home.

If you have a water purification system for the entire home, then do check that as well. Often, the filters in this system might have some clogs that can be cleared, or the filters themselves can be replaced at a relatively low cost. On a similar note, if your hot water supply is the problem, then check the water heating system, as well as the plumbing leading to the hot water faucets.

If none of these home improvement ideas seem to increase the water pressure in your faucets, then the solution may be out of your direct control. Sometimes the pipe diameters are wrong for the needs of your home, or the supply doesn’t hit your property with adequate pressure. In such cases, call in the experts and let them have a look at it and propose solutions for the pressure issue. Never try to do major repairs or replacements on your own if you’re not a qualified plumber – the collateral damage might be more than you can handle.
